Yesterday afternoon, the headquarters of the newspaper LA RAZÓN hosted the II Foro de Inteligencia Artificial, organised by the newspaper and sponsored by Atresmedia, a meeting at which professionals and managers from different economic and social spheres debated the state of one of the most disruptive technologies on the current scene.

The event was opened by the director Francisco Marhuenda, who addressed a few words to the attendees, but not before thanking Miguel López-Valverde Argüeso, Consejero de Digitalización de la Comunidad de Madrid, for his presence. ‘We are facing a great revolution, I would say the most extraordinary one. Artificial intelligence is bringing us a new economy where we will have mechanisms that will allow us to grow faster and do things that were unthinkable until now,’ said the director. Marhuenda, who claims to be a faithful follower using tools of this type, asks politicians for a regulatory framework that allows its development, as other countries compete with an advantage due to the lack of rules. During his speech, he also called for collaboration between universities and companies to be encouraged, and for the research carried out to be profitable and marketable because it is at the service of everyone.

Training and specialisation in AI

The debate forum was moderated by Arantxa Herranz, a journalist specialising in technology, who introduced the speakers one by one: Rubén Nicolàs i Sans, Director of the Escuela Superior de Ingeniería, Ciencia y Tecnología of UNIE Universidad; Jordi Marín, Director of AI Projects at Planeta Formación y Universidades; Jerónimo Mora Pascual, Secretario Autonómico de Innovación, de la Conselleria de Innovación, Industria, Comercio y Turismo de la Generalitat Valenciana; Plácido Balmaseda, country manager Spain and Portugal of EXTE; and Carolina Castillo, director of operations and member of the Management Committee of Microsoft in Spain.

For Rubén Nicolàs i Sans of UNIE Universidad, ‘training is key and not only in technical careers or specific professions, but it must be permeable to other programmes and degrees’. He also added that ‘if we don't integrate it in an intelligent way or with critical thinking, we won't get the student to master it’.

Jordi Marín, Director of AI Projects at Planeta Formación y Universidades, made it clear in his speech that academic training must be very much aligned with use cases, so that people know how to interpret it. For Marín, it is clear that there will be professions that will tend to disappear and this is where training will be the basis for everything so that people are not affected. He also states that ‘traditional professions with AI will generate a new employment opportunity. In most sectors, incorporating AI will lead to the creation of a new job,’ he says.

Regulation, sustainability and other aspects

For Jordi Marín, ‘the regulatory framework also generates opportunities for companies’, to which he added that ‘we must find the balance that allows us to have such a regulatory framework, which can even be adopted globally, but without restricting the ability to generate new AI models. I am sure that we will end up finding the middle ground that will allow us to be competitive with the rest of the countries,’ he concluded.

At the end of the panel discussion, and after the intervention of the Consejero de Digitalización de la Comunidad de Madrid, the organisation offered attendees a tasty cocktail to round off the II Artificial Intelligence Forum, a moment that allowed attendees to exchange opinions and network.
